Preregistration

Due to supply and demand unique to the Chicago undergraduate venue, students enrolled in a Chicago undergrad program receive an early registration ("pre-reg") window the week before open enrollment. You will receive more information as the date approaches.

There are two ways you can always know what you should be taking. Click here to find out what they are.

There's a foolproof way to find any course if it's being offered. To do that, search only the course subject and course career. Leave all other fields blank.

EXAMPLE: Let's look for PS-3322 Ministry to Women in Pain (undergrad course)

  1. Ensure you are searching in the correct semester.
  2. Select PS (Pastoral Studies) in the Subject dropdown menu.
  3. Select Undergraduate from the Course Career dropdown menu.
  4. LEAVE ALL OTHER FIELDS BLANK. Click Search.

The search will yield every undergraduate course with the PS prefix that’s offered in the semester you’re searching. The courses will be listed in numerical order (e.g. PS-3321, PS-3322, PS-3323, and so on). If the course is not listed, it’s not being offered that semester.

Not sure where this leaves you? Select "a course I need to take to stay on track isn't being offered" in the above question.

Many programs require one or multiple elective courses. An elective is a program requirement which may be fulfilled by any one of several courses. The student has the freedom to choose from an established set of options which one they will use to fulfill the elective requirement.

Electives can be found in both graduate and undergraduate programs, but not all programs have them. Some kinds of electives have a very narrow range of options, while some are very broad.

TO FIND OUT WHAT ELECTIVES YOU NEED AND WHAT YOUR OPTIONS ARE TO FULFILL THEM, CONSULT YOUR PROGRAM PLAN.

Electives in Undergrad On-Campus and Seminary Programs

In Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Master of Divinity program plans, major/concentration-specific elective options are listed at the bottom of the program plan itself. BA program plans also contain an extra page that lists all the options for fulfilling electives that are part of the Bachelor of Arts core (e.g. Math/Science, Literature, Bible, Theology, etc.).

Electives in Moody Online Undergrad Programs

In Moody Online program plans, electives are referred to generally as Academic Disciplines. There are several categories that may be required at different credit amounts in different programs, e.g. Humanities, Critical Thinking, etc. The example below is from the Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies program plan. A complete list of courses you can take to fulfill these requirements is attached at the end of every Moody Online program plan (Approved Academic Discipline Courses).

Open and Interdisciplinary Electives

An open elective or interdisciplinary elective may be fulfilled by any course not already required for the program, provided the course career level matches that of the program (undergrad or grad). If you'd like some guidance in choosing open or interdisciplinary elective that aligns with your goals and interests, reach out to your Faculty/Program Advisor. This person's name is found in your myMoody Student Center > Program Advisor (right side of the page, under Enrollment Dates). If no one is listed, contact arecords@moody.edu.

To find out if there are any holds on your account and which department placed them, go to your myMoody Student Center. You will see a window labeled "Holds" on the right side of the page. Click on Details to find out who placed the hold. Call or email that department if you are not sure what you need to do to resolve the hold.

That information is in the Class Details.

Do you know how to locate Class Details? Play this video to learn.

Has enrollment opened for the term you're wondering about? You can check on our home page.

If it has, and you do not have the option to search for courses for the upcoming term, email arecords@moody.edu.

There are two common reasons this happens:

1. It's past the registration period for the class in question. Click Homepage (top left) to see registration dates and deadlines.

2. You may be searching in the wrong semester. Check the term/dates of the class you're looking at. If you are, start your search over and be sure to select the correct semester.

Holds do not prevent you from being able to select a course, but they may prevent you from enrolling.

Click here to request late enrollment in a course.

Enrollment limits ensure quality for students in light of factors like classroom size, subject matter, and modality. Therefore, students may not enroll in courses whose enrollment limit has already been reached.

Exceptions to class capacities may be approved under special circumstances by the faculty Field Chair over the course.

Credits earned outside Moody will be considered for transfer credit as long as they meet the following criteria:

  • They were earned within the last 15 years
  • They are college-level (usually numbered 100/1000 or higher)
  • A grade of C or better was earned (B- for graduate students)
  • The school at which they were earned was accredited at the time they were earned
  • The course content is equivalent to a course in the student's Moody program

Other restrictions apply. Find complete transfer credit requirements and accepted accreditors in the Academic Policies section of the current academic catalog.

To inquire as to whether a specific course is eligible for transfer, contact your academic advisor.

Credits earned outside Moody will be considered for transfer credit as long as they meet the following criteria:

  • They are graduate-level (usually numbered 500/5000 or higher)
  • A grade of B- or better was earned
  • The school at which they were earned was accredited at the time they were earned by a Moody-approved accrediting organization.

Moody Bible Institute graduates may receive a limited number of advanced standing credit toward requirements in select programs at Moody Theological Seminary. Contact your academic advisor for more information.

MTS students hoping to receive transfer or advanced standing credit from other schools must request an evaluation by completing the form provided by their academic advisor upon matriculation. This form and relevant documents must be submitted within your first semester.

Other restrictions apply. Find complete transfer credit requirements and accepted accreditors in the Academic Policies section of the current academic catalog.

Please use the general transfer credit information provided to get an idea of whether your coursework is transferrable to Moody. For questions about specific courses, email your academic advisor.

There's a way you can check! It's called a What-If Report.

Click here to learn how to use it.

Considering a change but want to make sure it won't set your graduation back?

First, make sure you have access to your current program plan AND the program plan of the new program you're considering. The new program plan should match the current academic year.

  • How many credits are required (overall) for the new program, compared with your current one?
  • Will all of the credits you've completed so far apply to the new program?
  • Will you be changing your pace at all when you enter the new program, or continuing with the same pace?

To discuss further, send an email to your academic advisor.

Current MBI Chicago and MBI Aviation Students

If you're a Chicago undergraduate or Aviation student changing into a Moody Online program, here are the important things to know:

  • Moody Online courses are typically 8 weeks long. There are two 8-week sessions every fall and spring semester, and one in the summer.
  • Moody Online courses are typically asynchronous (no live meetings required). They are not lecture-based like most on-campus courses.
  • Program requirements in Moody Online programs can differ significantly from those in on-campus programs. Make sure you understand the requirements of your new program before you join.

Considering a change of campus or venue other than the type outlined above? Go back up to the top of this form and select "Changing my campus/venue." This includes Chicago undergrad students hoping to "go online" while remaining in their current program.

This is a great question to discuss with your Faculty Advisor before you make your decision. What is a Faculty Advisor, and how do they differ from your academic advisor?

Your Academic Advisor is a non-faculty staff member who is an academic catalog and policy professional who deals with transfer credit, program plans and program changes, and the graduation process. You can find their contact info in the bar on the right side of this page.

Your Faculty/Program Advisor is a Moody professor who is an expert in their field you're studying. They teach your classes, and they're also available for conversations about:

  • Your career and ministry goals
  • Adjustments to coursework to meet those goals
  • Changing program/major to meet goals
  • Filling degree-specific electives, open electives, and interdisciplinary electives
  • Internship expectations and placement

To find out who your Faculty/Program Advisor is, go to your myMoody Student Center. On the right side of the page, under Enrollment Dates, you will see a box labeled "Program Advisor." If no name is listed, email arecords@moody.edu.

Great! You just need to fill out the program change form on our Forms Page. You can do that any time during:

Term Program Change Request Period
Fall Aug 1 - Sep 30
Spring Jan 1 - Feb 28 (29)
Summer May 1 - 31

Here between program change request periods? Check back once the next one starts.

If approved, your program requirements will change to the requirements of the new program according to the most recent academic catalog. If any previously completed credits are not required in the new program, they may not carry over.

Full details and policies regarding program changes may be found under Academic Policies in the academic catalog.

The type of program change you are interested in requires that you complete some additional steps through the Office of Admissions. To find out what you need to do to join this program, please email admissions@moody.edu or call 312-329-4400.

No problem. Send an email to your academic advisor (contact info to the right).

If courses you need to take to complete your degree are offered on a campus/venue other than the one you are officially enrolled in, you do not need permission to take courses in that venue.

Note: Courses that are similar in name but that have different course codes do not necessarily fulfill the same requirements. Make sure to check your program plan to ensure you are registering for the correct courses.

Whether this is an option for you depends on how the courses you still need to complete your degree will be offered between now and when you intend to graduate. Chicago-based programs are intended to be completed on the Chicago campus. Therefore, it is not guaranteed that they can be completed online/remotely.

Whether you're a senior looking to finish 1-2 semesters from another part of the country/world, or you're just considering going back home for a semester or two and then returning, here are some important things to think through:

  • It's crucial to talk to a member of the faculty in your major when considering taking major-specific courses online/remotely. Are those courses available in a modality that does not require in-person attendance? Talk to your Faculty/Program Advisor about this (Student Center > Program Advisor).
  • Many courses in the BA Core (courses most students take regardless of major) are available online and/or have at least one online alternative.
  • Some courses are taught in a Hybrid or Highly Flexible modality which may give students outside the Chicago area a chance to participate remotely. Always check with the instructor when considering these types of courses.

Contact your academic advisor for more information.

You may request this change by filling out a Change of Program form.

Go back up to the top of this form and select "Changing my program/major."

Will my Moody Online credits apply?

If you've already taken courses required for an on-campus program at the time you join it, those courses will be satisfied regardless of whether you took them on campus or online.*

Example: You begin the Associate in Biblical Studies online degree and complete a few online courses, including BI-1111 Old Testament Survey. You then get accepted to the BA in Biblical Studies on the Chicago campus. BI-1111 is already satisfied when you enter that program even though you took it online.

*Previously earned MBI credit is applicable to current MBI programs for up to 30 years.

What if I've taken courses that aren't in the on-campus program I'm considering?

They may still be able to apply as electives of some kind. For tips on determining whether your completed credits will apply to a new program, go up to the first question and select "Changing my program/major."

How do I make the switch from Moody Online to Chicago?

To start the process, email admissions@moody.edu or call 312-329-4400.

No problem. Send an email to your academic advisor (contact info to the right).

If the course you were planning to take isn't being offered and you want to take something else to fill your schedule, start by checking for the next unfulfilled course in your program plan.

If the course that's not offered is one you need to take in the upcoming session/semester to stay on track to graduate, email your academic advisor (contact info to the right).

Click here to find out what steps you need to take to graduate. A complete list of graduation requirements can be found under "Graduation and Commencement" in the Academic Policies section of the academic catalog

Applying to graduate is mandatory for every student who wants to have their degree or certificate conferred. Without an approved application, you can't graduate!

Every student must apply to graduate prior to the start of their final semester:

Graduation Term Application Period Late Application Period (Add'l $75 fee)
Fall June 1 - Aug 1 Aug 1 - Sep 1
Spring Nov 1 - Jan 1 Jan 1 - Feb 1
Summer Nov 1 - Mar 1 N/A

Applying to graduate is required regardless of whether you intend to participate in commencement.

The Graduation Application is located on the AR Forms page during the above dates.

If you received an application denial email, please take the steps outlined in the email to determine the cause of your ineligibility. Graduation applications are only denied if you have some unmet academic requirement. If you have followed the instructions in your denial email and still aren’t sure what to do, reply to that email with your question(s).

To change your expected graduation term (EGT), click here

If you're considering a change of EGT but have questions first, reach out to your academic advisor. Their contact info is on the right side of this page.

Expected Graduation Term (EGT)

EGT is a piece of data assigned to every single student which is used to track their proximity to graduation (completing their program). It is used by the Office of Academic Records to do things like:

  • Ensure all expected graduates receive relevant, timely, and sufficient communications about the graduation application.
  • Report to other departments at Moody how many students will be graduating or have graduated in a given term.

What does EGT mean for you, the student?

It's important that your EGT matches your actual intentions as closely as possible at any given time. Naturally, the exact timing of your program completion will become more certain the closer it gets. Accordingly, the closer you are to graduating, the more important it is to make sure your EGT is up to date and accurately reflects your plans.

How do I check my EGT?

The easiest way to check your EGT is to email arecords@moody.edu or your academic advisor directly.
